SWITZERLAND
ALPINE ART
THE ITINERARY
Arrive Zürich, and head for the hills - a grand tour of the alps await. Head south by train or private car to the alps of Graubünden. As you wind along the deep blue of the Walensee, the mountains begin to rise. Meander through small villages until you enter into the valley of light past Illanz. Slowly edge up a small steep tree-lined canyon to arrive in the quaint old style ension/ B&B, on the banks of the Valserrhein, run by your hosts Ruth and Thomas. Enjoy a gin and tonic and the sounds of Charlie Parker, while you peruse the extensive art and design library and socialize.
Head up to the tiny homestead of Leis for a cozy dinner. Sled down and drift to sleep in sumptuous duvets of Lithuanian linen to soothing sounds of the rushing waters outside your window. After a wonderful breakfast of fresh baked bread, homemade jams, local cheeses, muesli with cream and yogurts, dried apricots and a fresh tea of alpine flowers, head out for a guided ski tour of the Zerverilla or the Dachberg, the highest resort in Switzerland at 3,000 meters above sea level, and explore the newly envisioned art zone which wanders through the high peaks. Watch the sun caress the eastern peaks from slate terraces of the Vals thermal baths designed by Architect Peter Zumthor. Let your cares and muscle aches drift away in therapeutic waters.
After a few days of high altitude ski touring and relaxation, head over the Julier pass, by car or Abula pass by train, toward St. Moritz, the origin of the apres ski. Grab a quick coffee or prosecco and watch as people clad in furs and neon skate over the long ice expanse of the Silvanplana. After your apero and enough people watching, take the old restaurant train-car adorned in velvet and beautiful oakwood to S-Chanf where Ladina, your host, will greet you with open arms and show you to your room uniquely decorated with an incredible collection of art and luxurious bathroom of highest architectural quality. Walk through the halls enjoying the current exhibition, while enjoying a glass of wine and local cheeses and charcuterie from high in the alp and retire in the luxury of the red sitting room - always adorned with fresh flowers and stellar arrangements.
Head a few minutes down the road to Chesa Colani for a dinner by chef Paolo, a truly curated gastronomic experience which will intrigue your sense for days. Skate ski for miles along the river inn and follow Nietzsche‘s footsteps through the mountains behind Sils Maria and sit in historic halls graced by great philosophers. Travel by train to the other end of the Engadin for a stay in Sent. The simple interiors and Giacometti Museum will bring another depth to this adventure. After a delicious bowl of barley soup and a glass of local wine, snow shoe to the the Tarasp Castle or Museum Susch, both housing large private collections. Return for a wonderful dinner in the cobblestone courtyard in the center of Lavin. Then it's back to Zürich for a night on the town and a cocktail in the Widder Bar.
